In Ellis Family Vacation, Devale and Khadeen Ellis open the series with their sons in Birmingham, Alabama. This bookable itinerary is built around the same city, with civil rights landmarks, a historic ballpark, and gardens that suit a family. The link below opens the full trip, where you can change, edit, or lengthen any part of it.

A City with Layers

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, and it gives you history, food, and open space within a short drive of each other. You stay at The Kelly, the itinerary hotel, so you have a comfortable base for the whole trip. The Five Points district and Alabama Tower sit in the city’s center, and Yo’ Mama’s is on the itinerary’s list of places to visit when you are ready for a meal.

Civil Rights History

Plan to spend real time at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The museum tells the story of the movement in the city where so much of it happened, and it gives a family a way to understand that history in the place itself. Just across the way, 16th Street Baptist Church is a landmark of the movement and a place many visitors come to stand in front of. Together, they make the most important stops on the trip, and they are worth giving a full morning.

A Ballpark, Furnaces, and Engines

Birmingham also rewards a curious family. Rickwood Field is a historic ballpark, so you can walk in and feel baseball’s past. Sloss Furnaces, the former iron-making complex, shows the industry that built the city, and you can see the scale of the old furnaces up close. For anyone who loves things with wheels, the Barber Motorsports Museum fills its halls with motorcycles, a hit with kids and adults alike.

Gardens, a Park, and a Free Day

When the family needs open air, Birmingham Botanical Gardens is the place to slow down among flowers and shaded paths. Railroad Park is a green space near the city center with room to run, picnic, and watch the world go by. The itinerary also leaves a free day on your own, so you can go back to a favorite stop or add something new.

For two more stops tied to the Ellis family’s episode, add Vulcan Park, home to the giant cast-iron statue above the city, and the zoo.
