In the episode, Gill takes a boat ride along the Algarve’s sea cave coastline, and this bookable week-long itinerary is built around the same stretch of southern Portugal. You get a rental car, three bases on the coast, a private excursion to the cliffs and beaches of the southwest, and a Jeep Safari into the hills. The link at the end opens the full trip, where you can change, edit, or lengthen any part of it.
A Beach Base in Albufeira
The Algarve is Portugal’s southern coast, a long run of golden beaches, sandstone cliffs, and small towns where the Atlantic sets the pace. You land at Faro Airport and pick up a rental car, which is the right way to see this region, since the stops worth making sit between the towns as much as in them. Your first two nights are at VidaMar Resort Algarve in Albufeira, a resort base with the beach close by. You can start with a swim and an unhurried dinner instead of a schedule.
Lagos, Sagres, and the Wild Coast
When you are ready to explore, a private five-hour excursion takes you west to Lagos, Sagres, and the Costa Vicentina. This is the wilder side of the Algarve, where the coastline turns rugged and the beaches feel far from the resort strip. The route reaches Aljezur, with its castle and river, the forested hills of the Serra de Monchique, and the beaches of Arrifana and Monte Clerigo. Because the tour is private, you set the pace, and a guide can point out what you would otherwise drive past.
To see the coast from the water, add the boat ride from the episode. Wave-cut sea caves open into the cliffs along this shoreline, and a boat takes you in close, beneath rock arches and into chambers you cannot see from the clifftop.
Portimao, Faro, and the Jeep Safari
From there, the trip moves east along the coast. You spend two nights at Vila Alba Resort in Portimao, then drive on to Real Marina in Faro for two more. With a rental car, the drive is part of the trip, and you can stop wherever a beach or a cafe catches your eye.
The Jeep Safari is the day to leave the sea behind. Over six hours, a guide and driver take you inland from Albufeira, so you can sit back and watch the countryside open up. The route includes Paderne Castle, a hilltop fortress with views over the surrounding land, and a stop at a farm near Albufeira that shows you the quiet, rural side of a region best known for its beaches.
