Travel Man: Berlin
- X
If Richard Ayoade and Roisin Conaty’s weekend in Berlin on Travel Man made you want to see the city for yourself, this bookable three-day itinerary is built to get you there. You will rattle through the streets in a Trabi, walk a stretch of the Berlin Wall that is now an open-air gallery, and eat and drink your way through a city that stays up late. The link below opens the full trip, where you can change, edit, or lengthen any part of it.
Cold War Berlin, Up Close
Berlin is Germany’s capital, and for decades the Wall split it in two. Your base is Hotel Adlon Kempinski, steps from the Brandenburg Gate, so you wake up in the middle of that history.
The Berlin Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie puts the story in front of you. Your skip-the-line ticket means you walk straight in and spend your time on the exhibits instead of the queue, tracing how the city divided and how people tried to cross. It is the stop that makes the rest of the trip land harder.
A Wall Turned Gallery
Then see what Berliners did with the Wall. The East Side Gallery is a preserved stretch of it, covered in murals by artists from around the world, and you can walk the whole length in the open air. Every few steps, a new painting. Bring a camera.
When you need green space, Tiergarten is a huge park in the middle of the city, with paths for strolling and shade for a pause. And for a souvenir you cannot get anywhere else, step into the Photoautomat, a vintage photo booth, and walk away with a strip of black and white pictures.
Rattle Through Berlin in a Trabi
The Historic Berlin Trabi Car Tour is the highlight. The Trabant was East Germany’s little compact car, loud and boxy and a piece of history on four wheels, and the tour lets you see the city the way East Berliners once did. Expect plenty of attention from people on the sidewalk.
Nights Out
Berlin comes alive after dark. Schleusenkrug Beer Garden is the place for a cold drink under the trees, and Nobelhart and Schmutzig is the stop for a serious dinner. Two very different evenings, both worth planning around.
Add the Episode’s Highlights
A few more moments from the episode drop easily into your own days. Visit Checkpoint Charlie itself, the famous crossing point at the heart of the Cold War story. Add a replica Cold War apartment to step inside daily life behind the Wall. And for a different kind of night out, find a vintage Kegelbahn, a German bowling alley, and see if you can land a strike.
