Lucky in Love: San Diego

A couple's trip through Balboa Park gardens, La Jolla sea caves, and Coronado's cliffside sunsets, all built around San Diego's easy mix of city and coast.

Gaby and Miguel's stop in San Diego leans into the city's split personality: museum-lined parks in the morning, open water in the afternoon, and a beach town glow by evening. It's the kind of itinerary that works whether you're planning a proposal trip or just need a few days where the biggest decision is what to eat next.

Start Slow in Balboa Park

The couple spends their first stretch wandering Balboa Park, and it's easy to see why. The park holds more than a dozen museums, walkable gardens, and Spanish Colonial architecture that makes for a full morning without ever feeling rushed. Right next door, the San Diego Zoo gives Gaby and Miguel a chance to see the park's animal residents up close, from pandas to the aviary trails.

When it's time to eat, they head to Liberty Public Market, a converted naval building turned food hall where local vendors serve everything from fresh oysters to Filipino comfort food. It's a good reset point before heading toward the coast.

Get on the Water in La Jolla

San Diego's coastline is where the trip opens up. At La Jolla Cove, Gaby and Miguel watch sea lions lounge on the rocks before joining a La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour, paddling directly into the sandstone caves carved along the cliffs. It's one of the few spots on the West Coast where you can kayak straight into a cave from the open ocean.

For a quieter afternoon, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers cliffside trails overlooking the Pacific, with views that stretch far enough to make the pace of the trip feel intentional rather than packed.

Close Out on Coronado and the Cliffs

The final stretch belongs to Coronado Beach, known for its wide sand and views back toward the San Diego skyline. Before the sun goes down, the couple makes a stop at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, where the coastline drops straight into the ocean and the evening light turns the whole scene gold. A detour through Old Town San Diego rounds things out with a look at the city's early roots, adobe buildings, and a few good spots for a last dinner.

Coronado's wide sand dunes give way to open Pacific views, a fitting last stop on the trip.

The Takeaway

Gaby and Miguel's San Diego trip covers a lot of ground without ever feeling like a checklist: gardens and museums in Balboa Park, wildlife at the zoo, sea caves and cliffs in La Jolla, and a coastal wind-down on Coronado and Sunset Cliffs. It's a trip built for pacing, not rushing, and it's easy to see why the two of them called it lucky. Ready to follow their route? Book the itinerary and make it your own.
