Lucky in Love: Washington D.C.
This trip retraces Gary and Dean's Lucky in Love days in Washington D.C. Visit the Lincoln Memorial and the International Spy Museum, kayak the Potomac, then end the trip on the Georgetown Waterfront.
Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States, and it fits an unusual amount into a small area. The monuments of the National Mall, one of the country’s best-known museum districts and a working riverfront are all close enough to cover on foot, by scooter or by kayak. This itinerary strings together four of the city’s best days out, and it’s built on the Lucky in Love episode with Gary and Dean, who picked D.C. for a couples’ trip with more to it than a beach chair. The link below opens the full trip, and you can change any part of it.
Begin at the Lincoln Memorial
The trip starts at the Lincoln Memorial, where a huge marble statue of Abraham Lincoln sits inside a columned building overlooking the Reflecting Pool. From the steps, you can see across the Mall to the Washington Monument and, beyond it, the Capitol. It’s the clearest introduction to the city, and it sets the scale for everything that follows. To cover the Mall without sore feet, add a scooter tour between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, which the episode does and which is easy to book.

The U.S. Botanic Garden offers a quiet, plant-filled break near the Capitol.
Step Into the Spy World
Next, the itinerary heads to the International Spy Museum, an interactive museum about espionage. You can look at Cold War gadgets, learn how tradecraft works and test your own skills, all in a way that turns into conversation for the rest of the day. It’s a good rainy-day option and a good fit for couples who like to do things together. For a quieter counterpoint, add the United States Botanic Garden by the Capitol, a warm, plant-filled greenhouse that’s easy to enjoy before the crowds arrive. Eastern Market, a historic market in Capitol Hill, makes a good stop for fresh food and handmade goods on the same day.
Paddle the Potomac
The middle of the trip moves onto the river. Potomac River kayaking puts you on the water with the skyline and monuments in view, a side of D.C. most visitors never see. It’s an active afternoon, and the river’s calm stretches make it approachable even if you haven’t paddled much.

The Wharf's waterfront stretch mixes dining and river views.
End on the Georgetown Waterfront
The trip finishes at the Georgetown Waterfront, a riverside path next to one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. It’s made for a slow walk with nowhere to be, and it’s a pleasant way to close the trip. If you want a livelier last night, The Wharf, another stretch of restaurants, shops and river views, is a short trip away and works well for dinner.
