Travel Man: Split
- X
Joe Lycett and Aisling Bea found plenty to love in Split, and this bookable three-day itinerary is built around the same city. The link at the end opens the full trip, where you can change, edit, or lengthen any part of it, so it can stay a long weekend or grow into a longer stay.
A City Built Inside a Palace
Split sits on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast along the Adriatic, and its old town grew up inside the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman emperor’s home. Today those stone lanes and courtyards are full of cafes, shops, and restaurants, so you spend your mornings with coffee in a place that is nearly two thousand years old. Your base is Briig Boutique Hotel, the itinerary hotel, which puts you in a comfortable spot to start and end each day. When the sun starts to drop, head to the Riva, the palm-lined seafront promenade where the city strolls, sits down for a drink, and watches the boats in the harbor.
Trogir and the Cetina
Day 2 takes you out of Split on a historical and culinary tour of Trogir, a small historic town near the city. A guide walks you through its old streets and its food, so you learn the stories while you taste your way through the place. It is the kind of day that makes a trip feel like more than sightseeing.
Day 3 trades stone streets for moving water. You go rafting on the Cetina, a river that cuts through the Dalmatian landscape, and the mix of current, scenery, and company makes it a day you will talk about afterward. When you come off the water, Joe’s Beach Lounge is waiting on the itinerary’s list of places to visit, a spot by the sea to dry off, order something cold, and let the afternoon slow down.
Hands-On Extras from the Episode
Joe and Aisling did a few things in Split that you can drop into your own plans. A Croatian cooking class has you rolling strudel and learning how to cook fish, and you leave with a dish you can make at home. Sunset paddleboarding puts you out on calm Adriatic water as the light changes, and it is easy to pick up even if you have never stood on a board. The episode even features a puppy riding along on one.
If you want something funny, add Froggyland, a museum of stuffed frogs arranged in tiny scenes. It is odd, charming, and an easy way to fill a rainy hour. For a gentler morning, you can walk rescue dogs from a local animal shelter along a dedicated dog beach. You get sea air, a long stroll, and the company of a very happy dog.
