United Dates of America: Charlotte

This trip follows the Charlotte episode of United Dates of America. Get the adrenaline going at the Whitewater Center and go kart at Trackhouse Motorplex, then finish with duckpin bowling and line dancing in South End.

United Dates of America sends British singles across the US to meet Americans on blind dates, and this episode takes on Charlotte. The trip lets you explore the city on your own terms. Charlotte is a North Carolina city with a compact skyline at its center and neighborhoods built from old factories and mills. You start with ghost stories on foot, then glide downtown on a segway. Two revived industrial districts come next, with plenty of places to eat, drink and wander, and the evening ends in a honky-tonk. The link below opens the full trip, and you can change any part of it.

Ghost Stories and Segways

The haunted walking tour works as an icebreaker. A guide leads you through Charlotte and tells ghost stories tied to the places you’re standing in, so the city’s past comes with a shiver and a lot to talk about afterward. Then you pick up speed. On the segway tour, you stand on a two-wheeled electric scooter and glide through the city with a guide, so you see far more of Charlotte than you could on foot, and your feet don’t give out. Most people get the hang of it within minutes, and it’s hard to stay serious while riding one.

The segway tour covers more of Charlotte than a walk, with a guide along for the ride.

Two Districts to Explore

Camp North End began as a Ford Model T assembly plant and has been reborn as a campus of restaurants, markets, studios and murals, with enough going on to fill an afternoon. South End was once a mill and rail district, and its brick warehouses now hold breweries, restaurants and shops, linked by a walkable trail beside the light rail line. Both are made for wandering. You can grab a drink, follow whatever looks interesting and let the afternoon take its own shape.

A Night Out and a Soft Landing

For the evening, the itinerary heads to The Rose Honky Tonk. Honky-tonks are casual rooms built around country music, where nobody minds if you don’t know the words. It’s a good place to finish a day of walking, riding and eating. Your base is The Ivey’s Hotel, a boutique hotel in the city, and getting there is simple. You fly into Charlotte (CLT), and a private car takes you to the hotel, so the trip starts with a ride waiting for you and not a line at the rideshare stand.
